What should I do if I have an accident or breakdown in my SIXT rental?

Claims, Damages & Vehicle Support

Had an accident, noticed damage, or received a citation during your SIXT+ rental? Here you’ll find everything you need to know about what to do next, how to report an incident, handle tolls or tickets, and get help with your vehicle — quickly and easily.

If you're involved in an accident or breakdown in your SIXT rental, stay calm, keep yourself safe, and call 911 if anyone is injured or the vehicle is blocking traffic. Full instructions are also printed on your rental contract and rental jacket, and a damage report is in the glove box.

If you're in an accident

  1. Move to safety and stay out of harm's way.
  2. Call 911 and request a police report.
  3. Collect contact and insurance details from all parties involved.
  4. Photograph the surrounding area, the intersection, and all vehicles — use caution when doing so.
  5. Complete the damage report in the glove box with as much detail as possible.
  6. If the vehicle is not drivable, call the SIXT Roadside Team at +1 888 749 8227, option 6.

If you have a breakdown

  1. Pull over safely, lock the doors, and turn on your hazard lights.
  2. Stay in the vehicle — do not accept help from strangers unless you have no way to call for assistance.
  3. Call SIXT 24-hour Roadside Assistance at +1 888 749 8227.
  4. Complete the incident/damage form.

Before you drive — a few quick checks

Take a moment to locate the heat and A/C controls, lights, windshield wipers, spare tire, seat belts, door locks, and the gas tank release before you set off. Also note your fuel level — don't wait for the warning light, especially in areas where gas stations are spread out. If any warning light appears on the dashboard, don't ignore it; call Roadside Assistance if you're unsure whether it's safe to continue.

Locked out, lost keys, or out of gas

A service charge may apply depending on the nature of the incident. To avoid those charges, you can add extended roadside protection when booking your rental. All services must be arranged directly through the SIXT 24-hour Roadside Assistance team at +1 888 749 8227, as they determine the type and extent of service required.

What counts as an accident

An accident is a sudden, involuntary, external event that results in property damage and/or personal injury.

If the accident wasn't your fault

Collect the other party's full contact and insurance details so SIXT can pursue them and/or their insurer for damages on your behalf. Please note that this pursuit does not remove your contractual obligation to pay for the damage.

How to get an incident/accident report

Check the glove box of your rental vehicle for a damage report form. Keep a copy of your completed report for your own records.

Your responsibility for damage

You are responsible for any loss of or damage to the rental vehicle resulting from causes including, but not limited to, collision, rollover, vandalism, theft, seizure, flood, fire, hail, or other acts of nature. Call +1 888 749 8227 as needed and complete the incident/damage form.
